Choose the right glass for your home

Not all glass is created equal. The type and quality of glass you choose can make a big difference to how your home feels — from warmth and comfort to safety, noise reduction, and even privacy. The best glazing option depends on your lifestyle, local climate, noise levels, and where your windows are positioned.
Fairview Kapiti’s window and door systems are designed to make your home more comfortable all year round. When you pair them with the right insulated glass, you’ll notice the difference — rooms that stay warmer in winter, cooler in summer, quieter, and more energy-efficient.

What is an IGU and why it matters

Modern homes use Insulated Glass Units (IGUs) — sometimes called double glazing — to improve comfort and efficiency. An IGU is made up of two or more panes of glass separated by a spacer. The space between the panes is filled with air or an inert gas and sealed around the edges to keep moisture out.
Fairview’s XR Edge Glass Units use advanced spacer technology to stop moisture entering the unit and to create a thermal barrier between the inside and outside panes. This helps prevent internal condensation and fogging, keeping your glass clear and performing at its best.
For even better results, adding Solace Low-E glass and argon gas can increase thermal performance dramatically. The almost invisible Low-E coating lets sunlight in but reflects heat back inside, keeping your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer — all while reducing your power bills.

Glass options to suit your lifestyle

Privacy Glass

Privacy glass is ideal for bathrooms, entry doors, or anywhere you want light without full visibility.
  • Reflective glass offers a mirror-like surface that reduces solar heat and provides daytime privacy.
  • Tinted glass cuts glare and makes it harder to see inside while reducing solar gain.
  • Patterned or obscure glass (such as Cathedral, Opaque or Stippolite) adds texture and diffuses light for subtle privacy day and night.

Safety Glass

Safety glass is essential for doors, large windows, and areas close to the floor.
  • Toughened glass is heat-treated to be up to five times stronger than standard glass. If broken, it shatters into small, blunt fragments rather than sharp shards.
  • Laminated glass sandwiches a plastic interlayer between two panes of glass. If broken, the glass stays stuck to the interlayer — a safer option for high-risk areas and added security.

Acoustic Glass

If you live near a busy road, school, or airport, acoustic laminated glass can dramatically reduce noise.
Two panes of glass are bonded with a special acoustic membrane that absorbs sound vibrations and energy. Combining this glass within a double-glazed IGU provides excellent sound insulation and a quieter, more peaceful home.

Why replacing old or single glazed glass windows and doors is a good investment

Upgrading from single glazing or older glass is one of the best ways to improve your home’s comfort and efficiency. Modern insulated glass reduces condensation, cuts heat loss, and can make your home noticeably quieter and drier. It also helps protect furnishings from fading by blocking harmful UV rays and can add value to your property.
Whether you’re renovating or building new, investing in quality glass pays off in reduced energy costs, improved comfort, and a healthier home environment.
